Weighing the Costs of Improving Highland Ave
June 19, 2025
• Considered the backbone of the town, Highland Avenue is considered to be in need of work to improve traffic, safety and accessibility. Funding that work poses a challenge, and may take the town down a familiar road.
With residential, commercial and municipal interests all centered on Highland Avenue, it is easy to justify its position as one of the most important arteries in town. In an effort to upgrade the roadway and its major intersections, town officials contracted with TEC, Inc in 2021 and are seeking to fund part of the anticipated $17 million price tag through the Department of Transportation’s “TIP” initiative.
Municipal Producer Yuxiao Yuan looks at the initiative, its scope and how it may be facing similar challenges to the “Envision Needham Center” project.
