Quiet Zone Brings Golf Course Crossing to Fore
December 18, 2025
• In what is already a fiscal and logistical challenge, one particular stretch of track may require a larger investment to make a Quiet Zone a reality.
For over a decade, the town has been looking for ways to reduce the impact of the noise generated by the Commuter Rail on the neighborhoods closest to their operation. While investigating the options, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which oversees the system, has outlined safety issues that need to be addressed at several track crossings before the reduction of the volume or frequency of use of train horns can be considered. At every road crossing there are equipment shortfalls that do not fit within their economic plan, but it is the Needham Golf Club property that may provide the greatest obstacle. Carys Lustig, the Director of the DPW, discussed options at the December 16th Select Board meeting, and updated them on what the private golf club is willing to consider.
