A Closer Look: Redesigning the Town Seal
August 31, 2023
• A new effort to update the official Town Seal and develop a Town Logo is beginning to gain momentum. Here’s why it’s happening.
For many, it seems like it has always been a part of the town, and it certainly seems to be everywhere: the Town Seal. As reported last month, a new committee is being formed to examine the seal, what it represents, and where it is used. It is an effort that has even warranted some funding at the state level. But…it’s a picture. What about it warrants such an undertaking? Municipal Reporter Yuxiao Yuan looks at the history of Needham’s current seal, and talks about the problems that town leaders are hoping to solve with a little bit of help and a lot of work.
Editor’s Note: In this report, Dr. Greis refers to 1898 as the year the current town seal was adopted. She has since corrected the year to 1891.
