School Athletics Confront Challenging Financial Future

• The Needham Public Schools’ athletics program has been reliant on its revolving fund reserves to combat increased costs and sustain operations, but if they continue without intervention, the fund balance will turn negative by fiscal year 2029.

Needham has the highest number of total teams offered to students K-12 compared to other public schools in the state of Massachusetts, but has increased the user fees for families by only $15 since 2007.

The athletics program has been paying more in expenses than it has been generating in revenue. Specifically, between the years 2023 and 2025, the program cost roughly $267,000 more than it brought in, with an additional shortfall of $88,000 projected for fiscal year 2026.

Finding appropriate funding for athletics is not a new challenge. This issue has been studied for several years with a previous sustainability review occurring in 2019. According to the Athletic Director Ryan Madden and budget analyst Jake Sykes, the same financial concerns were also expressed back then.

During their presentation to the Needham School Committee on Sept. 15, Madden and Sykes presented three potential solutions they found after their review and analysis. With options of raising user fees and increasing support from the operational budget, their objective is to take positive action before the deficit negatively impacts the athletics program.
