State Pledges Funding for Pollard Project
August 27, 2026
• In an anticipated, but welcome move, the Massachusetts School Building Authority committed to a partial reimbursement of the expenses involved with the upcoming middle school project.
On Wednesday, August 26th, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) met to decide the recipients of this year’s reimbursements for capital expenditures on renovating or building new schools. Among those projects, they announced support of up to $78,977,894 in grants for Needham’s plan to replace the aging Pollard Middle School and incorporate the sixth grade level.
It was the beginning of a long day for members of the Needham Public School Department, who shared the results at a School Committee meeting, and a Community Information Session later that same day. There they revealed that Massachusetts may provide funding for an additional $1.6 million dollars, if the project exceeds the estimated cost and has to access its contingency budget.
The MSBA decision sets up the next stage in the process, which would be to ask Town Meeting to fund the design and construction of the new building, ahead of an override request on the November state ballot. While spirits were celebratory at the Pollard information session, members of the Needham School Building Committee knew they still had work to do. The case for embracing their approach to the middle school still needed to be made to the community and the school’s neighbors.
