Local WWII Veteran Celebrates Milestone Birthday
May 4, 2026
• Fred Larson, a Needham resident and veteran, received warm 101st birthday wishes at a party last month.
As a young man, Fred Larson landed at Normandy just days after D Day. He served in the 91st chemical mortar battalion in the U.S. Army.
After the war, Larson made Needham his home. It’s where he raised his family, developed a career in communications and computer systems, and is now living out his golden years in retirement. He was born in Jamaica Plain and primarily grew up in Newton.
He turned 101 on April 14, and his fellow veterans, friends and loved ones recognized the special birthday at a celebration at the Lt. Manson H. Carter Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on Friday, April 17. Special Projects Producer Derick Risner covered the party. Take a look at stills from the videos he took below:

The Needham Channel will also provide coverage of the town’s Memorial Day commemoration later this month.
