Petitions Queued for Town Meeting

April 23, 2026
• When the august town body meets beginning next week, proponents of three initiatives will look for positive action through the citizens’ petition process. First, however, they are hoping for the Select Board’s support.

On April 27, Town Meeting members will be heading to the Center at the Heights to participate in the League of Women Voters of Needham’s warrant meetings. There they will learn about the various articles that will be up for consideration, from the town budget to the Pollard Middle School project, and articles from the Planning Board, Community Preservation Act Committee and more. They will also be learning about three proposals that are being offered up by their neighbors, through the process of a citizens’ petition.

A total of five articles were added to the warrant, through a grassroots tradition that allows residents to bring articles up for consideration independently of town boards and departments. All that is needed is the support of 10 registered voters within the town.

The first three articles are seeking a series of zoning and mapping changes to allow the lawful redevelopment of 888 Great Plain Ave., formerly the Hillcrest Gardens nursery. A separate initiative asks to instruct the town against pursuing or considering anything other than a four-lane plan when redesigning the Needham Center portion of Great Plain Avenue. The final citizens’ petition would lower the limit that the town manager is authorized to expend without first informing the Select Board.

The three proponents pitched their proposals to the Select Board at their meeting on April 15, and will find out whether they will endorse their articles at their April 28 session. Municipal Producer Melissa Marchese has the rundown.
