Girls Hockey Skates Circles Around Framingham
February 8, 2024
• Needham put up a trifecta of goals on the Flyers in the just the first period.
It’s been a season of runs for Needham Girls Hockey, winning seven straight over a monthlong stretch, but then dropping three of their next four games. All four of the games in that stretch finished with final scores of 2-1, so the Rockets were hoping for a much stronger showing against Framingham on Senior Night Wednesday at Babson Skating Center. Needham did just that, winning 5-1 and nearly shutting a Flyers team that has yet to win a game in the 2024 portion of their schedule.
The Rockets scored three of their five goals in the first period, with Freshman Bella D’Amelio and Seniors Lily Schmalz and Erin McDonnell getting on the board. In the second period, Schmalz scored again, her team leading eleventh goal of the season, then Freshman Laura Porras picked up her first ever varsity goal, to make it a 5-0 Needham advantage. McDonnell and D’Amelio each scored their fourth goals of the season.
Framingham would finally get a goal on the board late in the game, when the Rockets faced a 5-on-3 disadvantage, though Senior Goalie Allie Curtis denied the Flyers on several opportunities. Needham improved to 9-4-1 on the season, while Framingham fell to 3-10-4. The Rockets played next on Saturday night at home, but fell 4-3 to Braintree, dropping them to 9-5-1. They will next head to Rodman Arena in Walpole on Wednesday, February 14th at 8pm.
