Two Very Different Games

September 21, 2023
• Expectations were upended this week with both the Girls Soccer and Volleyball teams.

A few weeks into the season, you think you have a feel for the teams. The early scrimmages are done. The teams have had a chance to develop chemistry, and individual players know their roles and play them well. But as much as we know and observe watching the game, there are always going to be surprises. It’s one of the best things about sports–the games just have to play themselves out. This week we were treated to two different games that subverted our expectations. First up was the Girls Soccer team in their match-up against Weymouth. Wild weather had wreaked havoc on their early schedule, so anything could happen in their first regular season game at DeFazio Field. But the Rockets proved they had come home to play.

Thanks to a strong tradition, and a few well-placed reminders of victories past, the A-Gym is a place that leaves visiting volleyball teams wary. That didn’t seem to shake Brookline too badly, as the Warriors took on the Rockets on the 19th.

Both teams have turned up the heat heading into week 4 of the fall season. Girls Soccer had their chance at the Warriors, shutting them out 2-0 on Tuesday, the 19th and ended up with a scoreless tied game against Braintree on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Volleyball team shook off the Brookline game, taking on both Braintree and Barnstable at the end of the week, knocking them both out 3-0. They now get a bit of a breather, resting up for their next match against Walpole on Wednesday, September 27th.
