Keeping a Promise to Remember
On Monday, August 7, 2023 The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2498 held a Purple Heart Day Ceremony at Memorial Field. The ceremony included the reading of all 87 Needham Veterans who have been killed or wounded since World War I and have received the Purple Heart Medal.
Since 2015, the Town of Needham has been designated a Purple Heart Community. Every August since then it has designated a Purple Heart Day and encouraged people to display flags and remember those who have served and sacrificed in the name of this country. Needham is one of 105 Purple Heart Entities in Massachusetts. A growing tradition has been to recognize those who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal in a gathering where their names are spoken aloud. We were able to attend this year’s ceremony, which was organized by the Needham VFW.
