SUMMARY:Sunday Salon: “American Eldercide and Ageism Today”
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Needham Public Library present: \nMargaret Morganroth Gullette – “American Eldercide and Ageism Today”\nAuthor\, scholar and activist Margaret Morganroth Gullette will speak at the Needham Free Public Library on October 19 about “American Eldercide and Ageism Today.” \nDuring the Covid-19 pandemic\, Gullette argues\, cultural bias and government abandonment resulted in disproportionate deaths among older people living in nursing facilities. She has termed this tragic public health crisis “eldercide.” She believes that “Nothing about it was inevitable.” \nThe talk will be based on Gullette’s 2024 book\, American Eldercide: How it Happened\, How to Prevent It. Distinguished psychologist Erlene Rosowsky\, a Needham resident\, will interview Gullette\, who is currently a scholar in residence at Brandeis University. \nGullette will explain why she wrote the book and the choices she made in compiling it. She encourages attendees to read the book before the program to enhance discussion during the question and answer period that will follow the presentation. \nGullette\, 84 and a Newton resident\, is an internationally known cultural critic and anti-ageism pioneer whose prize-winning work is foundational in critical age studies. She is the author of six books. \nAmerican Eldercide: How it Happened\, How to Prevent It will be available for purchase and autographing courtesy of Wellesley Books at the conclusion of the event. \nThis Program is sponsored by the Friends of the Needham Public Library. Registration is required\, as we have a current capacity limit of 108. \n***IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION E-MAIL AFTER REGISTERING\, PLEASE CALL THE REFERENCE DEPARTMENT (781-455-7559 X2) TO CHECK REGISTRATION STATUS***

DESCRIPTION:Friends Program: Dr. Susan Rogers – “Individuality and the Music-Listening Brain”\nDr. Susan Rogers\, a behavioral neuroscientist and a former record producer and engineer known for her work with Prince\, will speak September 21 at the Needham library about the uniqueness of every music lover’s listening. She will describe the “listener profile\,” a constellation of mental sweet spots where music delivers the optimal award for each listener. \nDr. Rogers teaches for Berklee College of Music Online and is the author of This Is What It Sounds Like: What the Music You Love Says About You\, published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2021. She holds a doctorate in psychology from McGill University\, where she studied music cognition and psychoacoustics. Her research focuses on auditory memory\, the perception of musical signals\, and the influence of musical training on auditory development. \nFor two decades prior to her science career\, Rogers was one of the world’s few women known for her work as a record producer\, engineer\, mixer\, and audio electronics technician. Career highlights include years (1983–1988) as staff engineer for recording artist Prince. \nThis Program is sponsored by the Friends of the Needham Public Library.
