Homegrown Coffeehouse: 440 Gypsy Jazz
December 2, 2023 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
When you think about jazz, what images spring to mind? Do you find yourself in a club in New Orleans in the 1920s? Or in the moody atmosphere of a lounge in Paris in the 1930s or the 1940s? 440 celebrates the hot jazz tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with original compositions and arrangements by the band.
Tomoko Iwamoto, leader of 440, is a veteran of the Boston jazz scene. Tomoko has toured with Hypnotic Clambake, jammed with world renowned gypsy jazz musicians. She has played with Mood Swings Orchestra and Women in World Jazz, and collaborated with modern jazz guitarist, Chris McDermott.
Clarinetist John Clark, founder of the Wolverine Jazz Band, has played with traditional jazz and big bands. Clark also regularly appears with Dave Whitney and His Orchestra, the Swing Legacy, and the Mood Elevators. John is a student of the history of jazz and has recorded extensively.
Guitarist Jack Soref has been captivated by the music of Django Reinhardt for more than 20 years. Jack has jammed with the legendary guitarist Boulou Ferré. He has performed with Jazz Manouche luminaries like Joscho Stephan, Tim Kliphius, Aurélien Bouly, and Titi Bamberger.
Jim Guttmann’s career spans 40 years and many musical idioms. A founding member of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, he has toured the world, performed & recorded with Itzhak Perlman and Joel Grey, worked with Richard Stolzman and Dan Stepner. His album, “Bessarabian Breakdown” celebrates his musical experience, from traditional klezmer music to fusions of klezmer with traditional Afro-Cuban guajira and guaguanco.
