Creator of Social Security: First Female Cabinet Secretary Frances Perkins

October 23, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Frances was a confidante of FDR, the first female Cabinet Secretary, and object of admiration and contempt from her male contemporaries. She dedicated her career to providing exploited working men and woman with safe, humane workplaces.

Over the course of her political life, she pushed through legislation to reform child labor and reduce crushing work-week hours and developed a fire-safety
code in New York that became a model for the country. Plunging both hands into the development and implementation of the New Deal, Frances provided working people with financial safety nets that included Social Security and Unemployment Insurance. She helped crack the rigid societal model of the stay-at-home wife and mother. Join presenter Janet Parnes for a walk through the personal and professional trials and triumphs of this heroic, principled politician. Cost: Free
