Pollard, Large Houses to Headline Town Meeting

October 5, 2026
• Many weighty and long-anticipated matters will be addressed by a Special Town Meeting to be held in two weeks, on Oct. 19. We run through the warrant with Needham’s town manager.

The new town seal is making its debut on the cover of the Special Town Meeting warrant, the agenda and information packet for the upcoming legislative session. It is a sign that things are changing, and the actions of the town body can have a tangible impact on how things get done in Needham, no matter how long previous conventions have been in place.

Within that warrant, members will have a chance to vote on several matters that have been preoccupying town leaders, businesses and residents in recent years. Perhaps the most anticipated discussion will center around the first articles that evening, when Town Meeting is being asked to consider funding a new 6-8 middle school to replace the current Pollard and High Rock configuration. Their actions will set the stage for the upcoming November election, when voters will be faced with a property tax override request.

Also to be addressed are potential changes to town bylaws, aimed to place new limits on the size of new construction homes and incentivize the preservation of the town’s tree canopy. These warrant articles strive to strike a balance between preserving neighborhood character and promoting the continued growth of the town.

Ahead of the opening gavel, we sat down with Town Manager Katie King to discuss these and other issues that will be coming in front of Town Meeting for consideration.
