‘I Wear the Needham Badge Proudly’: Comedian Jared Freid Talks Family, Netflix Special

Jared Freid knows a thing or two about family.

“Your family is someone you love and you take a picture with on Thanksgiving over at Needham High [School] at the Needham-Wellesley game,” Freid said. “But it’s also the people you’re yelling at while passing the turkey at Thanksgiving when you get home.”

In his latest Netflix special, “The Family Plan,” the comedian, author and podcaster riffs on his family’s dynamics — their vacation habits, their relationship to food, their arguments — and the generational implications of staying on the cellphone family plan as an adult.

The special is based on a moment Freid said happened in 2018 during a family vacation: His family was at the beach, and his father asked him how much he weighed. He uses that story as the central point to guide his segues into other anecdotes and commentary.

“You’re going to walk in, you’re going to hear a story, it’s going to go in seven different directions, and then it’s going to come back to the same story,” Freid said of his special.

Freid, 41, graduated in 2003 from Needham High, where he played football and lacrosse and was a member of the boys swim and dive team.

Though he said he had no interest in stand-up comedy as a child, he enjoyed funny stories and sitcoms like “Seinfeld.” The structure of “The Family Plan,” he said, was in many ways an homage to the arcs of the sitcoms he was brought up on.

It wasn’t until after graduating from Penn State University and moving to New York, where he sold life insurance and annuities, that Freid began taking improv classes, writing sketches and signing up for open mics.

Fast-forward 16 years into his career, Freid said he is just now finding himself as a comedian. “The Family Plan,” he said, is “the best work I’ve ever done, and I’m so proud of it.” He taped the special in 2024.

Freid got his start in New York, but he brings his Needham roots with him on the road. Not just his comedic sensibilities — he said he believes everyone in Massachusetts has a cynicism that makes them funny — but also via a shoutout to a local business.

In “The Family Plan,” Freid jokes about his mother forcing him to take a photo with an increasingly larger group of people. Among the lineup is the owner of Fann’s Tailor Shop. Growing up, a common saying in the Freid household was “Fann will fix it.”

“He is a Needham legend, a Needham mainstay,” Freid said. “I think he is the best tailor in Massachusetts. No question.”

When asked how his parents reacted to his material, he recalled bringing them to the Comedy Cellar in New York to hear a set. When he started telling jokes about his mom Kim, she stood up to refute his retelling.

“I looked at the crowd and I go, ‘I’m getting heckled by my mom, that’s my mom. That’s who I’m talking about right now. Can you see what I mean?’” he said. “She has a right to her voice and her side of the story, and I always say parents are always 10% right.”

Freid is currently touring with a new hour of material, which he has been working on and performing for a year. He also hosts “The JTrain Podcast” and co-hosts the “U Up?” podcast with Betches Media co-founder Jordana Abraham. Betches executive produced his special.

In June, Freid published his debut book, “Walking Red Flag,” marketed as a lighthearted dating advice book. His first Netflix special, “37 and Single,” released in 2023 and is now available on his YouTube channel.

Six months ago, Freid posted a vlog capturing a visit to Needham on YouTube. In the video, he swings by his childhood home, Eliot School and Needham High, and patronizes Cafe Fresh Bagel, a staple for him growing up. After biting into the bacon, egg and cheese bagel, he says “it’s as good as I remember. It might be better.”

During an interview, he also lamented the loss of Kostas Pizza & Seafood, who had “the best pita.” He also wore his Needham Rockets hat — “I love being from Needham,” he said.

Freid said when he started doing stand-up, he met comedians whose material would focus on talking badly about the town they grew up in.

“That’s the one thing I couldn’t really relate to,” Freid said. “I wear the Needham badge proudly.”
