Girls Get Split Results Against Framingham

February 5, 2026
• Needham girls basketball and hockey hosted Framingham this week.

Needham girls basketball dominated Framingham, 70-23, without star senior Eva Andrews on Tuesday, Feb. 2. But the struggles continued for girls hockey the following night, as they fell 3-2 to Framingham in a close game.

Despite a slow start in the first quarter, girls basketball put up a 70-point performance for the second game in a row. The Rockets were held scoreless for over four minutes before junior Lacey Williams hit a midrange shot to put Needham on the board. They quickly added nine more points — partially due to their defense, which forced four turnovers — to take an 11-6 lead into the second quarter.

The Rockets added 17 points in the second, and their defense continued to shine, holding the Flyers scoreless for the first four minutes of the quarter. With 10 seconds left in the first half, senior Hannah Levine hit a three to put Needham up 28-11 at halftime.

Needham exploded offensively in the third quarter, scoring 29 points to take a 57-20 lead. Junior Aislin Flaherty had a strong quarter, hitting two three-pointers and scoring 12 points. Up by 37, head coach Lindsay Miller emptied the bench in the fourth quarter. Plenty of Rockets got on the score sheet, and the subs continued to play excellent defense.

Andrews missed the game with an eye injury suffered in the Rockets’ 73-20 win over Weymouth last Friday but is expected to return for Needham’s next game.

The Rockets’ relentless defense held Framingham to just 12 points in the second half, and forced 33 turnovers in the game. Levine led all scorers with 17 points, while Flaherty added 15. Needham had 10 different point scorers in the victory and will look to have Andrews back for their rematch against Braintree on Friday, Feb. 6. The Rockets defeated the Wamps 51-37 earlier this season on the road, and the matchup will feature two of the top 15 teams in the MIAA Division One Power Rankings. The Needham Channel will be there to record a broadcast that will air Monday night.

Following basketball’s blowout win, girls hockey lost a close game to Framingham, 3-2.

The first period went back and forth, but neither team was able to net a goal. The Rockets outshot the Flyers 13-10 in the period, but both goalies played excellently, stopping breakaway opportunities on both sides.

The second period was a flurry of action, as Grace Catella scored on a rebound to put Framingham up 1-0 at the 12:08 mark. Just two minutes later, the Flyers struck again with a goal from Madelyn Wheeler and took a commanding 2-0 lead. But Bella D’Amelio answered for Needham, finally putting one past Framingham goalie MacKenzie Kwok to make it 2-1 with 5:34 left in the period.

With 2:57 remaining in the second, freshman Dylan Jewkes scored her fourth goal of the season, the equalizer for the Rockets. Shortly after, Megan Sgroi broke free on a fast break for Needham but was taken down from behind and awarded a penalty shot. Unfortunately, she was unable to convert it, and the game went to the third tied at two.

Wheeler put the Flyers ahead for good at 13:03 with a shot that lifted over the head of Rockets goalie Jackie Lancaster. Needham was unable to answer and dropped this one, 3-2, despite outshooting the Flyers 39-29 in the game. With the loss, the Rockets are now 3-12 on the season and with just four games left, it is unlikely they will make the postseason.
