Rockets Girls Get Pair of Wins Over Wamps

September 13, 2024
• Girls Soccer and Field Hockey both defeated Braintree at home.

On back to back beautiful fall afternoons in Needham, two Rockets Girls teams knocked off Bay State Conference rival Braintree. Girls Soccer got a late goal from Isabelle Marino to win 1-0 on Tuesday, September 10th at Cricket Field. The following day, Wednesday, September 11th, Field Hockey walloped the Wamps, 6-1 from Founder’s Field at DeFazio Park.

Coming into their game against Braintree, Needham Girls Soccer was 2-0 on the season, after a 3-2 opening win at Brookline, followed by a 2-0 win in their home opener vs. Newton South. In the game against Braintree, the Rockets controlled much of the action, but couldn’t get a goal through. Needham looked to finally get one on the board in the second half on the only corner kick of the game, but the ball crossed over the end line before Callie McCarthy could kick it to Gianna Moreschi.

However, two minutes later, Moreschi fed Marino for the goal, giving the Rockets the lead they needed to seal their third win of the year. On Thursday, September 12th, Needham fought in another defensive showdown, pulling a 0-0 tie with Walpole, giving them a record of 3-0-1.

As for Field Hockey, they opened with a 10-0 win at Weymouth before coming up a goal short at Brookline, 2-1. In the home opener vs. Braintree, Victoria Meyerson started off the Needham scoring with a goal, followed by another goal, this time by Emmy Connors. Not even three minutes into the game, the Rockets had a 2-0 advantage, which lasted all of the first quarter.

In the second, after some great defensive efforts by goalie Caitlin McNeill and assisted by Talia Dwyer, the Rockets added another, when Freshman Emma Dammon scored her first varsity goal. Later in the quarter, Tess Eyler added a goal to put Needham on top 4-0 at halftime.

Although the Wamps would sneak one by McNeill in this quarter, the Rockets would answer as Meyerson scored her second goal of the game. In the fourth quarter, Needham added one more, with Tri-Captain Katelyn Birnbaum scoring her first of the season. Needham (2-1) will head back on the road for two games before coming back home to host Milton on Wednesday, September 18th.
